Parents express concerns over preschool poisoning

ST. PETERSBURG - Two Pinellas County parents have pulled their children out of a local pre-school after their toddlers got sick from drinking toxic lamp oil.

Tamika Roberson spent Wednesday morning picking up her son's blanket and other remaining belongings this morning. She says her son will not be returning to Preschool at the Point in St. Petersburg.

"This was the last straw," says Roberson. "So he has to be removed from this school."

Her 3-year old, Elijah, found an unlabeled bottle filled with lamp oil at the preschool and drank it yesterday, thinking it was juice.

"You don't put toxic chemicals inside the bottles," says Roberson. "If you're going make a discovery project, you put it somewhere that if the children do get a hold of it. It won't harm them."

Another toddler, Amerion Hart, also drank the oil and won't be returning to the school.

CPSC Urges New Parents to Adopt Lifesaving Routine to Prevent ...

Every day thousands of new parents assume the responsibility of caring for and protecting a child. Many of these first-time caregivers are unaware of the dangers of unintentional poisonings often related to medicines and household products commonly found in the home, such as personal care products, over-the-counter pain relievers and cleaning substances.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Poison Prevention Week Council are kicking off National Poison Prevention Week (March 18-24) to educate and inform consumers of the dangers associated with unintentional poisonings. From 2002 through 2004, about 36 children younger than 5 died each year as a result of ingesting poisonous substances found in and around the home. In 2005 about 91,000 young children visited hospital emergency rooms and more than one million calls were placed to poison control centers as a result of unintentional poisoning.

Government, businesses team up to bring new life to downtown ...

WRIGHTSVILLE - In a few years, Wrightsville has done what many communities only talk about, reversing a declining downtown into one on a steady upswing with more improvements coming.

The changes have come about through private donations, local tax dollars, federal grants, a swelling of civic pride and an influx of young entrepreneurs investing in downtown.

In the early 1990s, the fading Johnson County courthouse in the middle of town fit right in with dilapidated commercial buildings and crumbling sidewalks. The courthouse was in such bad shape that the Johnson County commissioners were considering abandoning it, turning it over to civic clubs and building a new courthouse outside of downtown.

But that plan generated such an outcry that the commissioners changed course and opted instead for a $1 million renovation that was completed in 1996.

Lampard ready for Hornets

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will play against Watford despite missing England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Andorra.

The 28-year-old suffered a fractured wrist in training after being struck by a Wayne Rooney thunderbolt on Monday.

Speculation in the media suggested that Steve McClaren had dropped Lamps, but Blues assistant manager Steve Clarke has insisted this was not the case.

"The boy was injured and he couldn't play in the match," said Clarke on Sky Sports News. "The decision was taken not to play him and not to risk him.

"He was happy with that decision and is now happy to be back here at Chelsea."

There were also rumours that his club arranged to fly Lampard back to England on a private jet, which were also denied by Jose Mourinho's right-hand-man.
