Lighting work gets fast-tracked by LBCC board

Due to their potential as health hazards, the Linn-Benton Community College board of education Wednesday evening evening approved fast tracking the bidding process to replace several light fixtures on campus that contain metal halide lamps.A report prepared for the board by college vice president Mike Holland, noted that the "metal halide bulbs give out bright, white light. However, a broken high-intensity light bulb of the type used in the gym and exterior walkways on campus are potential sources of ultraviolet radiation. An outer glass envelope normally prevents the release of UV rays. But if it's broken, the inner quartz tube keeps on burning. Exposure to a broken metal halide bulb can burn the corneas."

The bulbs are located primarily in Takena Hall, the gymnasium, outside corridors and parking lots.

Diversity comes home: Furnishings with international flair attract ...

Ethnic-influenced offerings may represent a minimal segment of the $78.5 billion home furnishings and furniture industry, but diversity in consumers and their preferences mean lines that go global are gaining visibility.

"The appeal of ethnic furniture is derived from manufacturers really taking a serious look at the customer base they're serving," says Jaclyn C. Hirschhaut, spokeswoman for the American Home Furnishings Alliance.

According to a 2006 U.S. Census report, one-third of the U.S. population is part of an ethnic minority group. New lines this year play to this demographic:

Spanish-language TV superstar Cristina Saralegui's new Casa Cristina home furnishings collection, which includes everything from comforters to tablecloths, is now available nationwide at Kohl's.

Palace vows prosecution of officials involved in lamps deal scam

MALACAANG said those behind the alleged P365-million lamppost scam would be prosecuted regardless of their so-called political connections.

The Palace issued the statement following the hint of reelectionist Senator Panfilo Lacson that many people in the Arroyo administration benefited from the alleged scam aside from two Cebu mayors and their engineering staff and regional public works officials.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

The Office of the Ombudsman has issued six-month preventive suspension orders against Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza pending investigation of their alleged involvement in the overpricing scandal.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said there would be no sacred cows in the Ombudsman's investigation of the case.
